Achieving an Affordable Green Data Center

Now that the economy is starting to show signs of life, 2011 is looking to be a breakthrough year for many in the IT segment. Companies long held hostage by poor cash flow and tight budgets, are finally planning to address overdue equipment refreshes, facility upgrades, and even data center expansions. While everyone cheers the changing momentum, many managers remain uncertain about implementing projects that meet IT requirements and achieve corporate ‘greening’ goals.

NER Partner Tripp Lite Introduces New Switched 3-Phase PDUs

Tripp Lite, a world-leading manufacturer of power protection equipment, has introduced 16 new Switched 3-Phase PDUs in addition to its already extensive line of network-grade Power Distribution Units. Data center managers looking for more powerful management solutions for their IT infrastructures can now economically add receptacle-level power visibility to their toolkits.

Tripp Lite 3-Phase Switched PDUs give IT managers the traditional ability to turn on, turn off, recycle or lock-out power to each individual receptacle, but now also provide power information at the receptacle level to monitor individual devices or group of devices. PDU power consumption per-phase or per-receptacle is visually displayed locally on the PDU, and can be monitored remotely via built-in Ethernet interface.

Data Center Energy Practitioner (DCEP) Certificate Program

We are pleased to announce Tim Hirschenhofer, our east coast Data Center iOS Specialist, successfully completed the DOE Data Center Energy Practitioner Certification program.

About the DCEP Program
The DOE “Save Energy Now” program has partnered with the industry in the development of a process leading to practitioners qualified to evaluate the energy status and efficiency opportunities in data centers. The key objective of the Data Center Energy Practitioner (DCEP) Program is to accelerate energy savings in the dynamic and energy-intensive marketplace of data centers.

The DOE has a goal to have at least 200 practitioners by 2011. Significant knowledge, training, and skills are required to perform accurate energy assessments in data centers. DCEPs are:

• Qualified to identify and evaluate data center energy efficiency opportunities
• Proficient in the use of DOE's DC Pro software tool suite
• Address energy opportunities in electrical systems, air management, HVAC, IT equipment, and on-site generation
• Trained on conducting data center assessments
• Required to pass an exam and be requalified every 2 to 3 years.

The benefits of using the Practitioners include consistency of qualifications and approach as well as a high level of repeatability and credibility of recommendations.
