EPA Releases New Energy Star Specification for Data Center Products

With industry forecasts predicting that server and data center energy consumption will nearly double from 2006 to 2011 nationally, the U.S. EPA is encouraging organizations to improve data center energy efficiency. To help organizations meet this goal, the EPA has announced updates to the energy efficiency requirements for a variety of Energy Star qualified products and equipment for data centers.

"All Energy Star labeled data center products will come with an associated Power and Performance Datasheet (PPDS) that lists product information and detailed test results," said EPA. "Energy Star recognizes that data center products are highly complex systems that require more than just a label to understand their energy performance. All data center products will be tested according to their specific Energy Star test procedure, the results of which will be reported in a standardized format in the PPDS."

In the update, EPA announced new spec process for Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), Data Center Storage, and Servers V2.0.

Energy Star Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) Specification - Version 1.0

The Energy Star Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPSs) v1.0 specification will be finalized and become effective in Q1 2012. It applies to nearly every UPS product on the market, from consumer-scale up through multi-MW data center systems.

An average Energy Star labeled data center UPS will recoup between 15 and 25 percent of its original purchase cost during its lifetime. For example, the average 1 MW Energy Star system will save approximately 266 MWh of energy per year, equivalent to saving $200,000 over the 15-year lifetime of the product—and many Energy Star products will save even more.

With more efficient Energy Star UPS systems data centers can stop dropping kWh on the floor before they’ve even touched the centers’ IT load.

Energy Star Data Center Storage Specification - Version 1.0

The Energy Star Data Center Storage v1.0 specification will be final and effective in mid-2012. It covers the range of storage products found in the SNIA Emerald taxonomy under the Online 2, 3, and 4 categories, including systems composed of both traditional HDDs and newer SSDs.

Energy Star will identify the top 25 percent most efficient storage products on the market by their idle state performance and will work toward active power measurement and labeling for a future v2.0 of the specification. Both idle and active measurements will enable customers to examine the energy performance of Energy Star storage systems to better understand and control their operating costs.

Energy Star Servers Specification - Version 2.0

The Energy Star Servers v2.0 specification will be final in mid-2012 and effective in late 2012 or early 2013. It covers traditional rack and pedestal servers with anywhere from one to four processor sockets and also covers blade servers. Servers that currently earn the Energy Star under v1.1 are, on average, about 30 percent more energy efficient than standard servers.

One or two socket Energy Star servers currently save anywhere from $200 to $500 each over their lifetimes—and double that amount if savings from reduced cooling loads are factored in. These savings, as well as those for larger servers and blade systems, will increase once v2.0 is finalized in 2012.

Additionally, Energy Star is collaborating with Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC) in developing an active power performance measurement tool known as SERT, which will provide customers with information about the energy performance of servers running common workloads.

In addition to the spec updates, EPA has also developed a downloadable brochure to help organizations decrease energy consumption ion the data center.

Advice provided in the brochure covers server virtualization, server consolidation and tips on investing in technologies that use energy more efficiently. The brochure, titled "Top 12 Ways to decrease the Energy Consumption of Your Data Center," is free to download on the Energy Star website.

For the past few years, data center power monitoring company Server Technology (News - Alert) has been attending DataCenter Dynamics Washington D.C., an event that provides an opportunity to come to grips with the latest in mission-critical infrastructure and networks with professionals from across the sector. This year is no exception.

“We attend DCD Washington DC because it’s the perfect show for getting in front of key data center professionals in the greater Maryland, DC, Virginia area,” Brandon Siri, senior marketing representative for Server Technology, told TMCnet. “We see a good blend of private and governmental customers attending this event. The Quote Portal allows each Reseller Rep the ability to store their profile (Name, Title, Company and Company Logo), view current and old quotes, review purchase history and access forms for product registration.

The Quote Portal also provides several options for each quote. Reseller Reps can create Customer Quotes, view prior Customer Quotes, request a re-quote from NER and submit Purchase Orders.
To customize a quote for your customer, Reseller Reps have the ability to change quantities and pricing, then export the file with their contact info and logo into an excel sheet ready for presentation to their customers!

SPM 5.0 : Rack-Level Data Center Power Management Solution
SPM is a unique data management tool in that it can serve as a user interface to cabinet power information and/or as a middleware solution, integrating with a variety of existing data center infrastructure management (DCIM) solutions. SPM provides data center power and environmental information via an Application Programming Interface (API) for a true "single pane of glass" view. In either application, SPM allows users to manage their entire CDU network for discovery, setup, configuration and firmware upgrades, as well as receive email alerts and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) trap forwarding and alarms. Customizable GUI Shows Status and Values - Calculated PUE/DCiE
Upload your own floor plan as a .jpg and the status of integrated inputs and sensors will be displayed on the floor plan.

Generally, monitoring systems with graphical floor plans showing equipment and sensors cost tens of thousands of dollars. Until now, these features have not been available on basic or mid-market monitoring systems.

New Firmware features:
- An image file of the floor plan can be easily uploaded to the Falcon FMS and configured by the end user.
- Map will display color coded values of sensors (temperature, humidity, amps, etc.) as well as the status of integrated digital inputs and Modbus Groups.
- Information and values from equipment integrated via Modbus are grouped and displayed as a summary value (circle) and are links. All information within the group can be viewed by selecting the link.

Floor Map Example

Power monitoring is as important as ever and understanding the impacts of the changes to your power infrastructure is critical. For years, the Falcon FMS has had the ability to monitor and provide alarm notification on the values from integrated power sensors and meters. Now, in addition to the monitoring, alarm notification and logging of your power values, the Falcon FMS will provide a graphical display showing how effective or efficient your power infrastructure is.

Firmware features:
- Up to 16 power meters can be integrated into the Falcon FMS.

Intelligent Containment – Beyond Hot and Cold

Just one year after winning the ASHRAE Technology Award, Opengate Data Systems Wins the 2011 Green Enterprise IT Award in the Outstanding Facilities Product in a User Deployment category. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) also a recipient of this award, presented their award-winning case study at the Uptime Symposium profiling a facilities product that improved data center energy efficiency.

AAFC’s Winnipeg Data Center has been under aggressive IT load growth. Implemented 20 years ago with a six inch raised floor and the last cooling infrastructure upgrade done in 1999, the data center is currently operating well beyond its designed IT load.

The first major cooling challenge halting growth occurred in July of 2008. Recognizing that the data center was operating inefficiently with significant cooling over-supply, a search was initiated to find ways to reclaim this lost cooling capacity. Standard best practices in air-flow management were successful initially, but a year later AAFC was again limited from further growth.

A single Opengate “intelligent” active containment hood was introduced at this time and proved significant in not only allowing increased IT load, but also provided a number of additional benefits. Key benefits that enabled intelligent cooling decisions in this challenging environment were the ability to record and automate reactions to environmental metrics, and the threshold alerting capabilities of the system.

Thus began the “Intelligent Containment” project, which to date has seen twelve racks retrofitted with six intelligent active hoods capturing the majority of hot aisle heat. This highly effective and easy approach has not only allowed IT load increases beyond what was previously possible, but did so without increasing cooling costs, enabling:
• fiscal and environmental leadership
• increased uptime
• higher density solutions
• the elimination of hot/cold aisles
• increased value of future free-cooling, and
• extended the life of an older data center

AAFC Winnipeg Data Center is Meeting Aggressive Growth Demands

The challenge for AAFC’s data center services was to grow approximately 40% with limited infrastructure investment. With Prairie HVAC’s assistance, the Opengate Containment Cooling systems enabled AAFC to quickly meet aggressive growth demands on data center services that were previously not possible given the center's cooling infrastructure. Opengate’s ability to actively manage rack airflow, with redundant fans and a secure Web server to email alerts and provided metrics, was significant in enabling intelligent cooling decisions. This in turn enabled higher power-density racks and increased cooling efficiencies throughout the data center. Prairie HVAC provided and implemented the Opengate intelligent containment. Upon installation of the first intelligent containment system at AAFC, the benefits were demonstrated and allowed the continued deployment of intelligent containment systems to further optimize the AAFC Winnipeg data center.

Opengate returns 100% of the hot server exhaust air directly back to perimeter cooling units or central air handlers

Containment Cooling systems take an innovative yet practical approach; contain the heat in the row and intelligently control it to simplify the entire cooling circuit. The Opengate system contains 100% of the heat right in the row of racks, eliminating the hot aisle. Eliminating the hot aisle is critical with temperatures easily exceeding 100 ºF (38 ºC) due to raised supply-air temperatures and more efficient, higher exhaust temperature servers. Opengate customers safely raise the data center cooling supply air temperature to the upper ASHRAE limit without any region in the data center being more than a few degrees greater than the supply air temperature.

Flexible architecture enables grouping of different rack types and quick placement of Containment Cooling systems as data center services grow

Multiple Studies Reveal

Data center cooling systems are delivering 2.6 times more air than IT equipment requires in an effort to maintain environmental conditions within the temperature range recommended by ASHRAE (American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Engineers). In most cases cooling system supply air is 10 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit below the ASHRAE recommended temperature. Best practices to reduce waste and attempts to passively contain air at today’s power densities have reached their limit. A 2010 ASHRAE study revealed that a typical 10 kW rack leaks 37% of the server exhaust heat out of the rack’s front rails and bottom where a majority of this air flows back into the left and right side intake vents of the servers. This study also showed that sealing the rack to prevent leakage results in leakage between servers and the pressure build-up in the rack causes a significant server fan power increase.

Opengate returns 100% of the hot server exhaust air directly back to perimeter cooling units or central air handlers
The EC30R Containment Cooling system takes an innovative yet practical approach; contain the heat in the row and intelligently control it to simplify the entire cooling circuit. The Opengate EC30R system contains 100% of the heat right in the row of racks, eliminating the hot aisle. Eliminating the hot aisle is critical with temperatures easily exceeding 100 ºF (38 ºC) due to raised supply-air temperatures and more efficient, higher exhaust temperature servers.

“The EC30R is an effective airflow management system. You only deliver cooling for what the IT equipment demands,” said Mark Germagian, CEO and founder of Opengate. “With deployment of our intelligent row-based containment solutions, customers are able to reduce data center fan power consumption by 700 watts per 1000 watts of IT load—a 70% reduction. If desired, Opengate customers can also safely raise the data center cooling supply air temperature to the upper ASHRAE limit without any region in the data center being more than a few degrees greater than the supply air temperature.”

Reaction to 'Microsoft Eliminates Server Fan, Despite PUE Hit'

This story/announcement definitely points to why PUE can’t be the “Holy Grail” for Data Center energy efficiency measurement and comparison. We have seen similar realities and results within clients doing aggressive virtualization. In both cases their overall power consumption goes down on the IT load side but their PUE goes up.

Reality is PUE is a result that can be manipulated. Google did it the other way, they moved a 9v battery (for back-up) onto the IT load side (into their custom server) thus eliminating UPS load from the Infrastructure side resulting in a lower PUE calculation.

Bottom line, reducing the IT load side of the equation without corresponding reductions of power consumption (via efficiency gain) on the Infrastructure/Facilities side will indeed lead to an increased PUE!

The goal of measuring PUE and all other efficiency exercises for that matter should be to reduce overall Power Consumption. What the client does with the overall gains (Savings, Add Manage-able load, increase redundancy, Avoid build out) is up to them. Seems Microsoft is correctly focused on that goal!!!

Is PUE a bad thing? I don’t think so, it has people looking at power consumption, IT load efficiency and Infrastructure/Facilities efficiency. It gives organizations a means to measure and compare the impacts of their actions in their environment. Most importantly it has organizations working to reduce overall consumption and improve efficiency. Good for their bottom line and the planet. Will it remain the key benchmark? For now, but make no mistake some form of watt per useful work/compute unit of measure and comparison will be on the horizon, but not for a while.

What’s it mean for NER and our iOS Solutions? We should continue to drive great value and efficiency on the Infrastructure/Facilities side with our industry leading Cooling Optimization Solutions. Cooling and moving air is the single largest component/variable of the Infrastructure/Facilities Power consumption equation. With products and solutions that can reduce Power Consumption for Cooling 40-80% (when combined) we are well positioned to help people achieve reduced PUE. In every case, we can and will significantly improve a Data Centers Infrastructure efficiency.

Power Transmission

The power transmission is the conduit for which power makes it way from the street to your equipment. Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPS), transformers, Static Transfer Switches (STS), PDUs, breaker panels, Remote Power Panels (RPP), Cabinet Distribution Unit (CDU aka power strip), and Transient Voltage Surge Suppressor (TVSS) are all means for which power is conducted to the cabinets.

Just about every avenue for this power transmission charges a toll called “power factor”. The key is to reduce the avenues that cost the most. Current UPS are pretty efficient with power factors of 90%. This means that it costs 10% of the power that the UPS is delivering to the racks. Old UPS have power factors in the 80% range or worse. Many times this power factor is relative to the load that is placed on the UPS. The closer to the maximum rated load, the more efficient the UPS operates. This creates a bit of a conundrum for best practices. Typically redundant UPS does not carry a load more than 45% of its maximum rated capacity. This practice leaves overhead for fail over in the event of a UPS failure.

To remedy this issue, consider a UPS with internal N+1 redundancy. Size the UPS so that it has enough capacity for growth but not so much that it compromises efficiency. Be sure to review manufacturers’ specifications. Also find a UPS that is capable of being scaled up with the installation of modules and a software update.

Voltage reduction has a large tax associated with it. Most large buildings have 480 Volts 3phase servicing it. From there it passes through a transformer which breaks the power down to 240V, 220V, 208V, or 110V. A transformer can have a de-rated value of up to 75% of its rated capacity. The key here is to deploy an efficient transformer or run a higher voltage to the rack so that a transformer is not required at all.

These step-down de-rated losses can be eliminated by converting the UPS output power to 415V. The 415V three-phase output provides 240V single-phase input to the server. The higher voltage not only eliminates step down losses but also allows an increase in server power supply efficiency. Servers and other IT equipment are capable 240V input without any problems. The key downside is the inability to deliver 110V to legacy devices.

Fan Assisted Floor Tiles

If sub-floor pressure is the factor for a cabinet overheating but it can not be relocated, there is a solution available. Smart fan assisted cooling can help remedy this issue. Smart fan-assisted floor tiles utilize a temperature probe that is mounted in the target cabinet. This probe has set thresholds that act as a thermostat for the fan tile. The fan ramps up speed as the requirement increases. As the requirement decreases the fan will return to an idle speed.

It is critical to make sure that there is enough cooling capacity to support the data center load, otherwise fan tiles will only relocate the hot spot. It is also important to know that fans require power and therefore produce heat which is why you should install a variable speed fan tile that ramps up fan speed only when it is required.

The figure below illustrates how the fan assisted floor tile extracts the air from the sub-floor no matter what the sub-floor pressure is. The results (purple plume) are dramatic compared to the (yellow plume) passive perforated tile next to it.

Intelligent air movers for the exhaust air are also available. Much like the floor tile, the ducted fan utilizes a temperature probe to control fan speed. The air mover is placed above the suspended ceiling. 12” flex duct is routed from a ceiling vent placed above a hot spot, to the unit, and exhaust from a ceiling vent placed above a CRAC unit.

Using Floor Tiles with Increased Perforation

Servers and other racked equipment are more than capable of cooling themselves with onboard fans. This equipment has a three part set of cooling specifications requiring the data center to supply.

- The first is air temperature typically between 65˚F and 80˚F.
- 30%-60% relative humidity (some experts prefer the higher air density that 60% RH has to offer however, there is a higher energy consumption associated with the production of humidity).
- CFM: 1 kW equals 120CFM to maintain a 20˚F delta through the device.

The percentage of perforation of the floor tile in conjunction with the sub-floor air pressure will dictate the amount of air that can flow through it. Increasing the percentage of perforation can increase the amount of air that the tile can flow, so why not replace all of the perforated floor tiles with 56% perforated grates? The answer; the sub-floor pressure may drop to the point where air delivery in sections of the data centers will depreciate greatly.

In the model below the top pane uses a single 56% perforated tile. The flow is increased through the 56% perforated tiles relatively. In the lower pane all of the perforated tiles are 56% perforated. The air flow varies greatly due to a drop in sub-floor pressure.

The key here is moderation. Place the higher perforated tiled in front of the higher density enclosures which require them. As mentioned above, 120cfm of air will maintain a 20˚F delta for a 1kW load. How can you tell if you are doing it right?

1. Measure the electrical load of the enclosure you are trying to cool. This can be done by multiplying the current reading on the power strip meters by the voltage of the power in the strips. Example: 22amps x 208volts= 4,576watts or 4.576kW.

2. Now multiply the 4.567kW by 120cfm = 548cfm of air required

3. Now you will need to use a tool called a “Flow Hood Balometer”. This flow hood has a 2’x2’ square box that fits over the 2’x2’ perforated floor tile. Inside the flow hood box is a meter that measures the amount of air flowing through it. These flow hood may be able to be rented from your local rental facility otherwise they rage from $800-$3000 new.

4. Adjust the percentage of perforation to match the airflow requirement as closely as possible. Some perforated floor tiles have an adjustable baffle that you can use to change the airflow of the tile.

5. Let the tile sit for about 20-30 minutes and return to take temperature readings at the front top, middle, and bottom of the cabinet. If any of the temperatures exceed 80˚F you may have to increase the cfm of air flow through the tile. You may also need to correct some in-efficiencies discussed further in this document.

6. Another option is to have a data center professional conduct a Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) study on your data center which can provide all of this information.

Sub-Floor Air Flow & Redundancy

The sub-floor of a data center is very similar to a weather system. There are mountains and valleys in the form of sub-floor congestion and opposing fronts coming from multiple CRAC units. All of these factors together create high and low pressure areas. It is imperative to know where these areas exist under the floor because will affect the air delivered to your cabinets.

As CRAC units come on and off line, high and low pressure areas change. Vortexes that resemble hurricanes are common under the subfloor. You do not want your high density cabinet placed in the eye of that storm. Air delivery will be little or reversed. Air can be drawn under the floor from above. The CFD modeling can predict the locations of the high and low pressure areas under all of the redundant CRAC scenarios.

The figure below illustrates how the air plume thru the perforated tile decreases as it nears the center of the sub-floor vortex.

Data Center Make Up Air Handler (MAH)

Make Up Air is an exchange of old stale air for fresh outside air. Most data centers rely on a building air handler to provide make-up air. This air handler is usually shared with adjacent rooms of the building. It also maintains positive air pressure in the data center. Make sure that the thermostat for this air source is located in a cold aisle of the data center and set accordingly.

A more efficient option is to have a data center dedicated Make up Air Handler provide the make up air. A dedicated MAH is also a great source for data center humidification and conditions 100% of the outside air entering the data center to its stringent requirements. Be sure to place the supply vents over the cold aisle and position the return so that it pulls air from the hot aisle.

Humidity Control

Drastic changes in humidity can be attributed to CRAC unit placement as well as multiple CRAC units not working together for a common goal. A short circuiting CRAC unit can over dry the air causing another CRAC unit in the same facility to register this dry air begin humidifying it-thus creating an endless energy draw.

In order for a CRAC unit to humidify the air, it must heat up and essentially produce steam. If the CRAC unit is heating then it is not cooling, there by reducing capacity. Several CRAC units can be rotating through these cycles. They are trying to condition the air individually rather than working together. It is imperative to reduce short circuiting to a minimum. Also network the CRAC units so they work as a team. A CFD study can find the source of the short circuit and help determine measures to reduce or remove them.

Another option is to remove humidity control from the CRAC units all together. Utilize a more efficient means for humidification by deploying ultra sonic humidifiers. Keeping the humidification separate allows the CRAC unit to dedicate their energies for cooling only.

I have communicated directly to most of you through email blasts over the last year giving you updates on our September 2009 selection as an HP Collaborative Infrastructure Partner (CLIP Program); the December 2009 sale of our Image1 and Imaging Supplies business units to Clover; the strengthening of our partnership with United Stationers in early April 2010; and an open letter later that month explaining how all of these announcements interrelate. Today I am proud and excited to introduce you to the new identity of the NER that we have been striving to build for the past several years.

Improved Freight Quoting Process

Starting on July 26, 2010 we will begin using new internal tools that minimize the steps involved in the freight quoting process, reduce the time to generate the freight quotes, and allow us to integrate the freight quote directly into the body of the product quote.

To take advantage of these new capabilities we need to you to provide us with a minimal amount of initial customer shipping information at the time you request the product quote:

If you know that there is a special or expedited service required please let us know that information as well at the time of request.

Unless specified, our freight quotes correspond to a “ground service” for all parcel shipments, “dock delivery” for all palletized LTL (less then truckload) shipments, and “lift gate service with inside delivery” for all cabinet shipments.

Freight quotes are valid for thirty (30) days. Please be aware some minor variation between quoted and actual rates may occur due to the application of the fuel surcharge. Fuel surcharge rates are posted by the US Department of Energy. As part of the new process, Product quotes will now be valid for a thirty (30) day period to correspond with the freight quote. This change from our current 60 day policy, will make the process clear and simple for all involved.

NER to Sell Imaging Supplies and Printer Parts Business Units to Clover Technologies Group

Glassboro NJ, December 22, 2009 – NER Data Products, Inc. (NER) announces the sale of the NER Imaging Supplies division and its wholly owned printer parts subsidiary Image1 to Clover Technologies Group Inc. (Clover). The agreement will transfer all imaging activities including compatible laser toner, inkjet, narrow and wide impact ribbon production, and printer parts to Clover.

Clover will assume responsibility for the NER Denver, Image1 Plano, and NER Glassboro supplies operations that support these business units. Customer and vendor relationships will be assumed by Clover and business will continue at all of these locations. In addition, NER is pleased to announce that over 80% of the NER employees at these locations will become employees of Clover as of the first of the year.

“The decision to sell off business units is not taken without great consideration,” said Stephen Oatway, President of NER Data Products Inc. “Approximately seven years ago, we began the process of strategically transitioning the company from offering commodity products to offering value-added solutions. As a result of our efforts, we have become a leader in both Managed Print Services and Data Center Infrastructure Solutions. In reviewing the direction of the company it was determined that a concentrated focus on these divisions was in the best interest of the company, shareholders, and customers moving forward. This strategic move allows us to focus resources on those business units that are poised for the greatest growth in the future.”

The sale will be finalized December 31, 2009 and terms of the transaction are not disclosed. The newly reorganized NER will be strongly positioned to continue providing industry-leading Managed Print Services and Data Center Infrastructure Solutions to their channel partners and their customers.
